New Social Trends Are Calling for Retirees to Begin Planning Ahead Sooner

Retirement in the 21st century is a new concept. The transition from full time work to full time retirement is a stage in life that may take many years. It is time to start imagining your life with a thirty year bonus. Certified Retirement/Life Coach Maurine Patten shares the five common risks of retirement and how to avoid them.

Saint Charles, IL, January 31, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Retirement in the 21st century is a new concept. There are two major trends: people are retiring earlier, and people are living much longer. Recent facts indicate the average age of a first retirement is 58 years. In the U.S., 10,000 people retire every day. Many retirees will live 30-40 more years.

To meet the needs of pre-retirees, Maurine Patten, a certified Retirement/Life Coach and owner of Patten Coaching and Consulting in St. Charles, IL has designed a series of Retirement Life-Planning programs incorporating elements from the fields of Emotional Intelligence and Positive Psychology. These assessments, teleclasses, and one-on-one coaching sessions give participants valuable insight into their values, strengths, and priorities necessary to create a fulfilling retirement.

Patten says, “Men really struggle – especially hard-working entrepreneurial types. Their identity has been wrapped up in the organization they created. Both men and women need to find ways to continue to use their strengths in a meaningful way during their retirement years.”

Details of the Life-Planning Coaching programs are available at www.pattencoaching.com/retirementas well as a complimentary copy of “Personal Retirement Data Sheet.”

There is no model for current retirees to follow because there has never been a time in history such as the one we are presently in. Traditionally, retirement was seen as an ending of one’s functionality leading to a life filled with empty leisure. This “gift of time” is a new beginning for retirees that is as unique and fulfilling as they want it to be. There will probably be a new name for this period of time because it no longer fits the definition of retirement.

With so many choices available, a lot goes into planning the ideal retirement. Avoiding the risks and getting it right may take some time. Patten says, “My mission is to help people create the retirement they really want rather than take the one that just shows up.”

Patten asserts that retirement calls for an expanded capacity for living and loving each day. She adds, “Every day we can ask ourselves: How can I learn to live and love better today?”
