San Francisco, CA, February 01, 2009 --(PR.com)-- "Everything You Need" Hotspot Starter Kit Priced at $99
Sputnik(R), a leading provider of software for venue-branded, access-controlled Wi-Fi networks, announced SputnikNet support for the NETGEAR Open Source Wireless-G Router WRG614L.
The Sputnik-Powered NETGEAR Wireless-G Router can be used to create a remotely managed Wi-Fi hotspot by simply plugging it into broadband, and signing up for SputnikNet service. SputnikNet is a web application that works together with Sputnik-Powered access points (APs) to enable providers to offer Wi-Fi services that support any business model--paid, free, or advertising-supported--under their own brand, or under the brand(s) of venues where they deploy.
Customers can purchase the NETGEAR Wireless-G Router pre-flashed with Sputnik-Powered DD-WRT firmware from Sputnik's online store at http://store.sputnik.com. Or, they can download free Sputnik Agent firmware from Sputnik's web site at http://www.sputnik.com/support/downloads.php and flash upgrade existing hardware. Once flashed, or "Sputnik-Powered", and plugged into broadband, the Open-Source Wireless-G Router connects to its assigned SputnikNet Account, is automatically provisioned and ready to go.
SputnikNet enables both the remote management of wireless networks and flexible subscriber management. Using a web browser, Wi-Fi providers securely access their entire network, which can be distributed all over the world, to view status reports and remotely control any Sputnik-Powered AP, or monitor/terminate client sessions on an AP. Providers can design custom captive portals (login pages), set up walled gardens, and post-login redirects to specific web pages. They can offer free, time- or bandwidth-limited access, or link access to customer loyalty programs. They can also block inappropriate content, limit bandwidth hogs and "cyber-squatters", secure their internal network, and offer their customers a safe, consistent, branded wireless broadband experience. SputnikNet is used by service providers to manage thousands of venues distributed in more than 100 countries around the world.
"We're excited to work with NETGEAR to offer a Sputnik-Powered version of the Open Source Wireless-G Router. For the first time, we're able to offer a complete Wi-Fi hotspot solution--the NETGEAR Open-source Wireless-G Router, a SputnikNet Account, and one month of pre-paid SputnikNet service--for less than $100. We believe that this price point, combined with the flexibility and power of SputnikNet, and the reliable engineering of the NETGEAR Open Source Wireless-G Router, will be a great solution for ISPs, Wi-Fi service providers, and venues who wish to offer Wi-Fi services under their own brand."
"We developed the NETGEAR Open Source Wireless-G Router along with an online open-source community at http://www.myopenrouter.com, in order to enable creative and compelling solutions such as Sputnik's" said Som Pal Choudhury, Senior Product Line Manager, Advanced Wireless at NETGEAR. "SputnikNet and the NETGEAR Open Source Wireless-G Router is a complete solution for hotspot providers whether they deploy one or thousands of hotspots."
