Yubico Brings Simple and Strong Authentication to MediaWiki
Yubico adds strong authentication to MediaWiki with YubiKey, a thin USB-key requiring no client software. This allows users to confidently access information in their Wiki communities and avoid the growing problem of spam, bots and misuse.
Sunnyvale, CA, February 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Yubico (www.yubico.com), the authentication innovator that helps the world trust the net, today launched support for MediaWiki, the free editing software originally written for Wikipedia.
YubiKey, Yubico’s invention, is the industry’s first USB-key providing instant and secure access to networks and services, from any computer platform or browser, without the need for client software or drivers. The revolutionary device plugs into any USB slot and with a simple touch on the YubiKey, sends the user's identity and a unique pass code every time one logs into an online service, such as MediaWiki.
Typically, MediaWiki users enter a username and password to edit pages, but with the YubiKey they login with a thin USB-key to improve security. With a strong identity tied to each contributor, MediaWiki users can avoid the growing problem of spam, bots and misuse.
“The 'Wiki' approach improves collaboration amongst organizations, developers and communities worldwide,” says Stina Ehrensvard, Yubico CEO and Founder. “And with that extra layer of security provided with a YubiKey, WikiMedia users can now confidently access information in their Wiki communities.”
The first company to use the YubiKey for a MediaWiki is Yubico itself. The company today launched a YubiKey application website (http://wiki.yubico.com), where solution providers can promote their own YubiKey product or service. By the end of February, users of the Yubico Application Wiki will be voting for best YubiKey applications using the YubiKey to verify the jury’s identity. The winners will be rewarded with special edition YubiKeys, a free visit to world leading Internet security conference in San Francisco, CA in April 2009 and global marketing to 100,000 security professionals and Security Now! podcast listeners.
