Simmons & White, Inc. Helps Webelos of Cub Scout Pack 714 Earn Their Engineer Activity Pins
West Palm Beach, Florida engineer firm helps local Cub Scout Pack earn their Engineer Activity Pins.
West Palm Beach, FL, February 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- 17 Webelos from Cub Scout Pack 714 spent the afternoon at the consulting engineering firm of Simmons & White, Inc. to learn about civil and traffic engineering and fulfill the requirements needed to obtain the engineer activity pin. The Webelos Program is a two year program for Fourth and Fifth Grade Boys. In both years, they work toward earning Webelos Activity Badges in twenty different areas, arranged in five groups; Physical Skills Group, Mental Skills Group, Community Group, Technology Group & Outdoor Group.
“You hope you can ignite the interest of one or two of these young men in engineering,” said Robert Rennebaum, PE, LEED AP of his experience with this Cub Scout Pack. Rennebaum, President of Simmons and White, Inc. in West Palm Beach, Fl, truly enjoyed opening the world of engineering and spreading the word that engineering is fun and a pretty good career, too.
The outing began with a brief overview of the different occupations and types of engineering that are available and the Webelos created a list and identified what engineers do in the different fields of engineering. Rennebaum then took them to a recent construction site across the street that Simmons & White had prepared the civil engineering plans for Applefield Waxman, and observed the construction, the Webelos then were taken through the process by reviewing and discussing the construction plans, construction observation reports and photos of the construction while underway. Other staff from Simmons & White discussed their projects and expertise with the Cub Scout Pack, such as, intersection signal design, construction plans for a planned bank building and a shopping center layout. Phillip “Tad” Rowe, PE a principal at Simmons & White reviewed the Minto PortoSol development on Okeechobee Boulevard including a review of construction plans and aerial photographs showing the progression of construction.
“Most of them had a genuine interest in engineering” said Gregory F. Bolen, PE, LEED AP, as he reviewed and discussed the Waterfront Commons/Clematis Street Redevelopment project in the City of West Palm Beach. Bolen, a principal and Vice President said, “we look forward to doing this again, we enjoyed it as much as the kids did”.
