Naperville, IL, February 14, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Lead poisoning may lead to a variety of health problems in children, including:

decreased bone and muscle growth
poor muscle coordination
damage to the nervous system, kidneys, and/or hearing
speech and language problems
developmental delay
seizures and unconsciousness (in cases of extremely high lead levels)

The recently enacted Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 has new restrictions on lead and phthalate levels in all childrens products designed for ages 12 and under. Affecting clothing, shoes, book, toys, jewelry, bicycles, literally all consumer products. This law is retroactive so makes illegal the sales of any children's product that exceeds the new lead and phthalate limits. This affects retail stores and also thrift and consignment stores. Clothing sales held by schools and internet sales are also affected.

From My Room is a children's and maternity consignment store in Naperville IL As a response to this new legislation, they are trying to increase awareness of the presence of lead in many household items. They are hosting an XRF testing party, open to the public, on March 8, 2009 where people can bring items to be tested for lead. A professional will be on hand to do this testing. Items will be tested on a first-come, first-served basis and we request a $5 donation be made to the Northern Illinois Food Bank Kids Backpack Program for each item tested.
