Young Englishman’s Passion for Native Sardinian Woman Drives Novel’s Powerful Plot
The Italian island of Sardinia is the setting of A. Colin Wright’s new novel, Sardinian Silver (published by iUniverse), which captures the essence of this otherworldly, beautiful place through the story of Englishman Arthur Fraser.
Arthur, a 24-year-old tourist company representative, instantly falls in love with Sardinia – its white sands, low hills, Roman ruins, exotic scenery, and morally traditional values. It’s the perfect tourist locale in 1960. As he acclimates himself to the culture, he meets a handful of colorful characters that both introduce him to the true beauty of Sardinia and have a lasting impact on him.
Among others, Gavino, an introspective and friendly lawyer, becomes one of his acquaintances, along with Teresa, a local maid, and a flamboyant American girl, Isabelle, who constantly offends traditional sensibilities. As he immerses himself in the resort town of Alghero, he becomes determined to find a Sardinian girl for himself. It’s a difficult task; local customs do not allow the unmarried to meet without chaperones, and Arthur soon learns the true danger of attempting to court a local beauty.
His luck changes when his boisterous superior, Maurice Winter, calls him to Rome. There he meets colleague Margaret Morley, a new representative in a nearby resort town. Their casual flirting is sidetracked when, on the boat back to Sardinia, Arthur meets the girl he is looking for: Anna Lorcas, a native “Sard” shunned by her culture because of her move to Rome. She is as stunning as Arthur imagined.
Arthur is at once captivated and disappointed to learn Anna must quickly return to Rome after a short stay. His love for her intensifies, and when Gavino embarks on a visit to Rome, Arthur sends along with him a present for Anna. Asking Gavino for this favor seals his fate – Anna and Gavino fall in love. Heartbroken, Arthur is fiercely determined to win his love back.
A passionate and intriguing story of unrequited love in a Mediterranean region steeped in mystery and ancient history, Sardinian Silver envelops readers in its rich characters and vivid depictions of this unforgettable place.
A. Colin Wright drew on his experiences in Sardinia in the 1960s for this novel. A graduate of Cambridge University, he is fluent in five languages and has taught Russian at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he currently lives. He is an accomplished playwright and writer of academic texts, including a major work on Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. More information is available at acolinwright.ca or sardiniansilver.com
