Bakersfield, CA, February 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, the Bakersfield Gathering and Games (also known as the Bakersfield Scottish Games) proudly invites all Kern County residents to become Scottish for one day. Everyone is invited to come and join in the excitement of this unique Scottish cultural event that will be brought to life for the 14th consecutive year by the Kern County Scottish Society.
This all-day cultural event, beginning at 9am and also known as the Bakersfield Scottish Games, can be enjoyed by all members of the family. They have music entertainment throughout the day and night, great food, dancing, athletic events as well as Scottish clan history and dress.
Nowhere else in Kern County will you see large men in kilts throwing telephone pole sized cabers along with a full set of Scottish Heavy Athletics. Equally exciting is the diversity of Celtic music from bagpipe bands to traditional and Celtic fusion rock. It’s a concert all day and even into the night. Learn about clan history, genealogy and shop for Celtic merchandise at the Bakersfield Gathering and Games.
Here’s what you can look forward to: men in kilts, bagpipers, Scottish Heavy Athletes with cabers, and highland dancers. Back by popular demand is the high energy, folk rock music of Tempest. Listen to their Irish reels, Scottish ballads, Norwegian influences and other world music elements. Tempest will be joined by the Wicked Tinkers and local Celtic bands Banshee in the Kitchen, 1916, and High Ground.
Tehachapi Mountain Pipes and Drums, Fresno’s Stag and Thistle Pipe Band, and Callanish Pipe Band will be performing throughout the Scottish Gathering and Games at Bakersfield College.
Travel over to the dance stage to watch Highland Fusion, White Heather Dancers, Caper Duck, and Black Gold Clog Dancers who will translate culture with their feet.
Your $13 presale ticket ($16 at the gate) also gets you up close to watch their strong men and women in kilts compete in Scottish Heavy Athletic events like the Caber Toss, Braemer Stone Put, Weight Throw, Beer Keg Toss, and, new this year to the Bakersfield Scottish Gathering and Games, the Hammer Throw.
Your children will not be left out. Children can test their strength with the Children's Games. Local Boy Scout Troop 133 will teach them how to throw that popular Scottish symbol, the caber. You may want to try it out yourself. Your children will also enjoy free face painting, storytelling by Terrence McArthur, and the entertainment of George the Giant.
Their world travelers will continue to party into the night at the famous Bakersfield Scottish Games Ceilidh (kay-lee), a separate paid evening event. Translated directly from Gaelic, “Ceilidh” means party. Let’s show our world travelers why Bakersfield has the reputation of having the best Ceilidh in California.
The Scottish Gathering and Games at Bakersfield College is an event that celebrates and preserves culture. This April, on Saturday the 4th, the world travels to you because culture is best preserved when it is passed on to our children and shared with others of different cultures. Everyone in Kern County is cordially invited to attend this event. Please give a warm, Kern County welcome to their world travelers at the Scottish Gathering and Games on April 4th at Bakersfield College.
