Wendy Parciak, Author of "Requiem for Locusts," to Discuss Mental Illness on "Coping with Caregiving" Radio
Missoula, MT, February 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Wendy Parciak, author of the new novel, “Requiem for Locusts,” will discuss mental heath issues on the “Coping with Caregiving” Internet radio show Saturday, February 28. The program airs live from 5:00-6:00 pm Central Time, with Parciak’s interview at 5:15 pm. To listen in, simply click on the yellow “listen live” button at the upper left of the website: www.wsRadio.com/CopingWithCaregiving.
Parciak knows why it is so important for families to address mental health at home and in their communities, because she grew up with a beloved sister, Christy, who after enduring numerous physical disabilities in childhood developed a psychosis in her late teens that caused terrifying visual, auditory and olfactory hallucinations. Parciak’s family took care of Christy, enduring the sorrow and stress of frequent screaming fits and even violence when Christy was certain her family was trying to harm her.
It took many years before Parciak realized the impact Christy’s mental illness had on the progression of her own life. She studied at the Juilliard School of Music, but after an injury changed careers and earned a Ph.D in Ecology. As she transitioned from one highly competitive career to another, Parciak eventually connected her craving for success with a deep-seated need to “make up” for what had befallen her disabled sister.
Parciak succeeds in doing just that in her highly acclaimed “Requiem for Locusts”, bringing attention to the injustice of alienation and discrimination that the mentally ill so often endure. From the perspective of a mentally disabled young woman, Parciak’s intriguing characters reveal just how much more alike we are than different—and that with empathy there is common ground.
