About the Book (Excerpts & Info)

“Thuen-Jaey” is the author’s first published novel. It is adapted from the original Thuen-Jaey that was written by an unknown author. Perhaps, his hidden intention was to defy injustice and suppression. A Cambodian king of his time suppressed his submissive subjects who’d lived in abject apprehension. It was his refusal to kowtow to the king’s absolute authority.

It is said that the written text was found underneath the dilapidated bamboo bed of his ramshackle thatched house. To these days, no one knows the original author’s real name. ‘Thuen-Jaey’ is one of the Khmer’s literary classics that has been taught in school and told through words of mouth in villages. The author treats it with great reverence.

‘Thuen-Jaey’ is a satirical genre. On a superficial level, it is simple to read and easy to understand. Yet, it is profound and complex to comprehend. On its surface, the story is more than a harmless comedy that’s coupled with decadent and perverse concepts of inherited power and sad jokes. Burying beneath it, there are dark and sinister views and woes of life — je veux dire, la vie verite — in the medieval Cambodian society.

Deftly constructed at 182 pages, Thuen-Jaey is being aggressively promoted to appropriate markets with a focus on the Social Science/ Folklore category. With U.S. wholesale distribution through Ingram and Baker & Taylor, and pervasive online availability through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and elsewhere, Thuen-Jaey meets consumer demand through both retail and library markets with a suggested retail price of $21.95.

Additionally, Thuen-Jaey can be ordered by retailers or wholesalers for the maximum trade discount price set by the author in quantities of ten or more from the Outskirts Press wholesale online bookstore at www.outskirtspress.com/buybooks
