Lice Removal Salon Goes Mobile to Bring Nit-Picking Services to Oakland Schools
Hair Fairies Screen Oakland Students for Lice and Nits.
San Francisco, CA, February 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Hair Fairies, the head lice helpers, announced today that it has hit the road to bring its nit-picking services to two local Oakland schools, proactively tackling head lice in a school district without a no-nit policy.
Oakland Unified School District reversed its no-nit policy in 2006, so students with nits (lice eggs) are allowed in the classroom to minimize days missed during lice outbreaks. Schools are no longer required to perform head lice screenings, however, two schools recently took proactive steps to screen their students. Hair Fairies visited both Hillcrest Elementary and Chabot Elementary this week to perform screenings and provide additional educational information about head lice.
Hair Fairies, in business since 1999, is a nationwide, full service salon dedicated to removing head lice with salons in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and now San Diego. With services including in-salon and in-home screenings and treatments, Hair Fairies also offers school screenings.
“We were pleased to have Hair Fairies come out to our school. Their technicians were thorough, friendly, and accommodating”, commented Beverly Rothenberg, Principal of Hillcrest Elementary.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), if a child is found to have active head lice, “The child’s parent or guardian should be notified that day by telephone or a note sent home with the child at the end of the school day stating that prompt, proper treatment of this condition is in the best interest of the child and his or her classmates.” Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses discourage the “no nit” policy due to the detrimental impact of prolonged absences sometimes caused by this policy. At the same time the AAP does acknowledge the findings of some experts that removing nits within 1 cm of the scalp can decrease a risk of self-reinfestation and that parents should consider nit removal at the time of treatment.
“Hair Fairies regularly performs school screenings and informational seminars,” said Maria Botham, Founder and President of Hair Fairies. “We have successfully worked with thousands of schools, pediatricians and parents to help minimize the spread of head lice.”
In addition to kid-friendly salons, Hair Fairies offers a full line of all natural removal and prevention products in the salon or online as well as in-home lice removal services, school screenings and informational seminars.
