StockInterview: State Senator Says Canadian, Not U.S., Uranium to Supply New Mexico Enrichment Facility
New Mexico State Senator Carroll H. Leavell told StockInterview.com that the uranium to be enriched at the proposed LES/Urenco uranium enrichment facility will be coming from Saskatchewan, not New Mexico, Wyoming or Texas. These states now produce most of the uranium mined in the United States.
Sarasota, FL, July 06, 2006 --(PR.com)-- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently issued its first license for a major commercial nuclear facility in thirty years. Urenco Ltd, a Netherlands-based energy firm, was awarded the draft license through its U.S.-incorporated consortium, Louisiana Energy Services. According to one state senator, the uranium they will be enriching won’t be coming from U.S. mining operations. New Mexico State Senator Carroll H. Leavell told the Internet news website StockInterview.com, “The uranium ore will be coming out of Saskatchewan.” He told StockInterview that Urenco Ltd informed him the uranium was coming from that western Canadian province.
Senator Leavell and others in a New Mexico delegation had visited Urenco’s headquarters in Almelo, Netherlands as part of their due diligence on the foreign consortium and its European uranium enrichment facility. StockInterview.com recently provided in-depth coverage on its news website regarding the proposed uranium enrichment facility and New Mexico’s nascent nuclear renaissance.
New Mexico State Legislator John A. Heaton won’t be happy. He told StockInterview, “We need to use the assets we have and not be dependent upon foreign countries. I worry a lot about the dependence we have on other countries.” Fellow legislator and a former National Council of State Legislator’s Energy Committee member David Miller told StockInterview, “The State of New Mexico may miss out on the hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenues from potential severance, ad valorem, sales and other taxes the domestic industry would pay the state to mine uranium in New Mexico.” Miller is also president of Strathmore Minerals, a company which is now advancing its uranium properties through the permitting process in New Mexico. He added, “The foreign uranium pays zero taxes to enter the state for enrichment.”
