Publishing Innovator Victoria Blake to Show Authors/Publishers New Ways to Think About Book Content

Inventor of the "wovel" -- a serialized novel whose chapters are posted on the Web week by week as readers vote to decide where the story should go -- Victoria Blake of Underland Press will assert that books are not books, but content in book form on February 28th at Arizona Book Publishing Association's (ABPA) annual conference, Realities of Publishing: Preparing for Changes in the Industry http://azbookpub.com/events/annual-conference/.

Phoenix, AZ, February 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Books are not books, but content in book form, asserts Victoria Blake, founder of Underland Press a genre imprint dedicated to weird, strange, odd, and unsettling fiction. Inventor of the "wovel" -- a serialized novel whose chapters are posted on the Web week by week as readers vote to decide where the story should go -- Blake will address this concept on February 28th at Arizona Book Publishing Association's (ABPA) annual conference, Realities of Publishing: Preparing for Changes in the Industry. In her presentation, Marketing Venues Beyond the Bookstore, Blake will show how book content can attract readers, serve as an advertisement for the publisher and can develop a community.

"All publishers are in the content business," Blake says. "It's our job to provide content to interested, intelligent readers. That's why I try to make Underland's website a go-to destination for fans, I’m constantly updating the information—providing free extras, like short stories and podcasts."

Blake joins a full panel of experts at this year's all-day conference including Grael Norton of Wheatmark, Inc., Tucson, AZ; Andrew Savikas of O'Reilly Media, Boston, MA; Kevin Smokler, of booktour.com, San Francisco CA; and Jessica Tribble of Poisoned Pen Press, Scottsdale, AZ. Presentations will cover everything from technology to production planning, distribution models to social networking and will be held at the jobing.com corporate office, 4747 N. 22nd St., Suite #100 in Phoenix. The cost for the all day conference is $109 for ABPA members and $129 for non-members and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Attendees can register online at http://azbookpub.com/events/annual-conference/.

About Victoria Blake: Victoria knew two things when she graduated from college: that she wanted to write, and that she wanted to pay her bills. Those two things led her to a career in journalism, then to Portland where she became a prose editor for Dark Horse Comics. Three years later, she founded Underland Press, a publishing company dedicated to weird, strange, odd, and unsettling fiction, in print and online. Since its inception two years ago, Underland has already earned a reputation for producing high quality work as a genre publisher. Blake earned her bachelor's degree from Barnard College at Columbia University and holds an MFA from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers.
