Balfour Beatty Construction Awarded $293 Million Jail Expansion Project
Dallas, TX, March 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Balfour Beatty Construction announced today the award of the Mecklenburg County Jail expansion project in Charlotte, North Carolina. The award comes through a joint venture team composed of Balfour Beatty Construction, Rodgers Builders, Trotter Development Group, and Lockman-Brooks Marketing Services.
The $293 million Direct Supervision Facility will contain an estimated bed count of 1,300 to 1,700 beds, and a new utility plant with expansion or renovation of existing support areas such as intake processing, commissary, training, laundry, workshop and storage. In addition, the project includes associated site work and infrastructure expansion and improvements.
Preconstruction on the project, which will be located on a site adjacent to the existing Mecklenburg County Jail North facility, will start in Spring 2009, and construction is currently scheduled to begin in Summer 2010.
Pat Dean, Vice President for Balfour Beatty Construction, states: “A key component of our strategy is to work for clients that value the construction manager-at-risk process and support problem solving through collaboration. Mecklenburg County identified the need for this approach early in the Jail’s planning phase and has selected a talented group of design team partners and consultants to work collectively to deliver superior results.
“This joint venture is a culmination of team members dedicated to Mecklenburg County’s success, and a leveraging of our company’s criminal justice experience to supplement our local knowledge and community commitment.”
Over the past 35 years, Balfour Beatty Construction has built more than 14 million square feet of criminal justice projects throughout the United States, including the Osceola County Courthouse in Kissimmee, FL; the Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, NC; and the North Carolina Scotland Correctional Institution in Laurinburg, NC.
