Shock & Oar: The Australian Nautical & Leisure Wear Brand ™
Fremantle, Australia, March 04, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A new and exciting nautical brand has launched into the world of yachting, but not in a way you’d expect. Shock and Oar has set its sights on becoming the iconic Australian Nautical and Leisure Wear Brand ™. And where better to start than Fremantle in Western Australia, home of the successful 1983 America’s Cup challenging team ‘Australia II’ and 1987 Cup defense.
Shock & Oar’s mix of classic style and Aussie-inspired fun has created a range of clothing and accessories that crosses easily from boat to boardwalk; such as cargo shorts, polos, T shirts and caps.
The idea for the brand came while Australian Brendon Westerhout and his New Zealand colleague Shane Dingle were build Captain and Engineer respectively on the 228ft yacht “Aussie Rules” built for golfer Greg Norman in 2003.
“They had the perfect Type A attention to detail personalities for me,” Greg Norman said in an interview about the build*. The duo gained the nickname “Shock & Awe” due to their unrelenting and dogged teamwork during the build. This name was later altered to Shock and Oar to cleverly reflect seafaring and engineering backgrounds.
In 2008 Shock & Oar was launched in Western Australia, a State with the highest rate of boat ownership per capita in the world**. The brand retails internationally via its e-commerce website www.shockandoar.com and locally through Tee 2 Sea boutique in the sprawling seaside city of Mandurah.
Managing Director Brendon Westerhout said his inspiration for Shock & Oar stems from his long career in the marine industry and a passion to create something unique from scratch.
“Through our careers we have had the good fortune to meet, work for and learn from some very successful people around the world, the most notable being Greg Norman. A common thread in their success has been a sense of brave determination to pursue their dream, and it is this sense that we have embraced and promote in Shock & Oar,” said Brendon.
For Brendon, establishing brand Shock & Oar has made more than just his dreams come true. The Australian brand has touched the lives of many others through the company’s sponsorship of local charities including Cystic Fibrosis in Western Australia.
“We are passionate about our company ethos Shock Oar Inspire which encourages people to grab every opportunity with both hands. It challenges us all to do what we dream of, be the kind of person we admire, and contribute to the world in our own unique way.”
Shock & Oar is exhibiting at the Fremantle Boat Show in March 2009 and plans to take its unique Australian Nautical and Leisure Wear Brand™ to the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show in the near future.
