Texas Association of Health Underwriters Lobbies for Consumer Advocacy

Agents Gather to Discuss Health Insurance Issues with Legislators

Austin, TX, March 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Texas Association of Health Underwriters (TAHU) held its 15th Annual Day at the Capitol on March 2, 2009 at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Austin. Throughout the day, over 100 independent agents from across the state met to discuss with Legislators the value and the role of the agent in the delivery of health insurance products to Texas consumers. TAHU members shared their experiences of helping their clients find affordable health insurance and clients make smart financial decisions as their clients seek out health care for themselves and/or family members.

At the start of the day, The Shirley Hutzler Excellence in Legislation Award was given to Stacey Merritt from Houston. Merritt was recognized for his dedication to TAHU through the years and his outstanding legislative service. The Hutzler Award is a once in a lifetime achievement for a member who has helped to spread TAHU’s message above and beyond the call of duty, without personal gain.

One of the day’s events featured keynote speaker, President and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute, Sally Pipes. Pipes addressed several myths of the healthcare system including the number of uninsured Americans, prescription costs and state-run healthcare systems.

“The event successfully addressed important concerns with the current healthcare system,” said TAHU president Ron Buffum. “We discussed with our legislators the problem of the working uninsured, small group agent certification, Health Savings Accounts for state employees and the overall value of the insurance agent.”

Prior to TAHU agents meeting with legislations, TAHU Lobbyist Lee Manross and Treasurer Misty Baker provided agents with a presentation on the proper ways to approach and dialogue with the legislative body in Austin.

At the close of the day, a panel discussion was held with Dr. Jim Henson from University of Texas at Austin, Harvey Kronberg editor of the Quorum Report, Ross Ramsey the editor of Texas Weekly and political blogger Eileen Smith. Panelists discussed the effects politics are having on the healthcare system and new legislation at the Capitol.
