Bedminster, NJ, March 27, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Lusmila McColl is one of several designers invited to showcase her Harris Tweed Collection at the “Dressed to Kilt” 2009 Charity Fashion Show being held at the M2 Club in New York City. The event is being hosted by Honorary Chairs, Sir Sean & Lady Connery. Lusmila McColl works with Harris Tweed Textiles, Inc (USA) to help re-introduce the fabrics to a modern clientele.
This Year’s Dressed to Kilt is organized by the Friends of Scotland, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation “dedicated to advancing contemporary Scottish interests and meeting contemporary Scottish needs in the United States”. Funds from this year’s event are “being raised for the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Wounded Warriors organization and the Erskine Hospital in Scotland”. As well as a hope to “offer scholarships in the medical field to help returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan”.
Dressed to Kilt is being held at the M2 club on 28thStreet in NYC, which is the space formerly occupied by Crobar, Studio Mezmor, and Mansion New York on March 30, 2009 at 7pm with the Fashion Show starting at 9pm. This year’s theme is the “Colours of Scotland” and is being held in conjunction with NYC Tartan Week, which is celebrating “Homecoming Scotland 2009”, a year-long celebration of all things Scottish as well as the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national poet and cultural icon, Robert Burns.
Harris Tweed (HTT, Inc (USA)) is a small cottage industry located in the Northern part of Scotland, on the Isle of Harris. The Tweed is still a hand-spun and dyed fabric that is made in small mills. HTT, Inc. (USA) is one of the companies that produce tweed by employing independent weavers and local community to supply the fabric to the fashion world. The cloth is protected by a 1993 act of parliament. A spokesman for HTT said: "Harris Tweed Textiles has the Scottish determination to succeed in a global market and we will continue to push Harris Tweed to be used in fresh and innovative ways.
Ms. McColl launched her fashion company, McColl&Clan, in 2008. And has had the opportunity to showcase her designs at fashion events in Scotland, NYC, and Japan. She designs and produces custom-tailored, hand-made garments using cottage textile industries and is branching into eco, green & sustainable textiles companies that support McColl&Clan’s eco-conscious philosophy, ethic, and practices.
Miss McColl has recently been collaborating with Harris Tweed Textiles’ Carloway Mill to create a number of new designs in the fabric. A proud Scots-American, it was these roots, her love for the fabric and its history which drew Miss McColl to Harris Tweed Textiles and using their cloth in her cutting edge designs. Lusmila explains “The history of this fabric weaves itself not only through the culture of the Scottish people but extends itself out to the world. Tweed is more than a fabric; it is a brand identity, a cultural icon and a personal statement.”
Ms. McColl’s mother comes from Scotland, and it is thru this background it has allowed her the opportunity to connect with her Scottish roots through the threads of the Harris Tweed Fabric. Currently, McColl&Clan has an online storefront and also creates custom pieces for clientele, upon request. Ms. McColl will be appearing in a 3-part BBC documentary TV series to be aired in Late 2009.
McColl&Clan’s Harris Tweed designs will be seen at: M2 530 West 28th Street, New York City (between 10th and 11th Avenues).
