From Sparkling Snowflake to Icy the Iceberg New Children’s Book Fills Physical Science Niche

Libertyville, IL, March 31, 2009 --(PR.com)-- When Outskirts Press author Larry Friend laid eyes on the soaring glaciers and awe-inspiring scenery of Alaska while on a cruise ship, not only was he thrilled by the beauty surrounding him, he was also inspired to share the story of how this ice was created with a very important audience—his grandchildren. In the library of the cruise ship, Icy the Iceberg was born. It’s a whimsical, colorful, and educational tale aimed at a young audience, and it fills a need for fun and informative physical science books.

Educators have complained that it is difficult to find educational materials for children on the formation of snow, icebergs, and glaciers—especially materials that are exciting and colorful. Larry Friend knew that children learn best when they’re fully engaged, and he wanted to help children explore these scientific processes in a way that would get them involved. So he created an adorable little snowflake named Icy.

Once upon a time near Vancouver, Canada,
the sun began heating the waters.
The water started to evaporate.
The water turned into a vapor.
This vapor formed molecules.
Into the air the molecules rose.
Higher and higher they went.
They became colder and colder.
At first the particles turned into water,
then the water became snow and…
Icy was born.

Parents and teachers are sure to have a captive audience for the story of Icy the Iceberg, as Icy begins his life as a sparkling snowflake, is squeezed for hundreds of years beneath tons of snow, and then emerges as a beautiful blue floating iceberg. He meets all kinds of friendly creatures and lets them ride atop his back—until one day he begins to melt, and it’s back to the atmosphere to be reborn. It’s a fascinating cycle, and an irresistible journey for all.
