The Northeast Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Celebrates 70 Years of Service to the Community at Regional Conference

Alexandria, VA, April 01, 2009 --(PR.com)-- On April, 24, 2009 over 400 members of the international service organization Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated will convene at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center to celebrate the Northeast Region’s 70 years of commitment to enhancing the quality of life within the community. Deborah I. Walsh, the Regional Syntaktes has selected “Education, the key to knowledge, leadership, power and success: as the theme for this year’s conference and celebration. As a result, all workshops and meetings held at the conference will focus on the promotion of education and leadership.

Several of the conference events are open to the general public (Tickets available online at www.sgrhoneregion.org/events.html). For example, on Saturday, April 25th at 12pm the Undergraduate luncheon is open to all guests. Six undergraduate members of the sorority that have displayed outstanding scholarship and leadership will be honored at this momentous event. Later on that evening (7pm), chapters of the sorority who have excelled in philanthropic programming and demonstrated service will be honored at the Awards and Achievements Banquet, the focal point of the celebratory activities. The conference will conclude with a Prayer Breakfast, Sunday morning at 9:30am. The keynote speaker will be Rev. Mary B. Oliver, Northeast Region Chaplin. This event is also open to the public.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven educators. The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University. The Northeast region of Sigma Gamma Rho is most recognized for collaborating with the Grand Basileus (international president) and the World Health Organization to host the first international conference with a focus on HIV/AIDS.

The Northeast Region is currently comprised of the following areas: Bermuda, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Haiti, Korea, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virgin Islands, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.
