Multiple Award Winning Lifetime Channel Documentary on Mary Magdalen Now Available on DVD

This Award Winning-Documentary tells the story of Mary Magdalen and contrasts what was said about her in the subsequent millennium.

New York, NY, July 20, 2006 --(PR.com)-- V.I.E.W. Video, a leading home video label and producer of cultural, music, documentary, and special interest programs, announced the July 2006 DVD release of the award-wining documentary MARY MAGDALEN: An Intimate Portrait, from The Lifetime Channel.

Hosted by actress Penelope Ann Miller and directed by Emmy Award-winning producer Charles Stuart, Mary Magdalen: An Intimate Portrait examines the life of the biblical character Mary Magdalen, and contrasts this to what has been said about her in the subsequent millennia. In presenting this penetrating film, V.I.E.W. Video president Bob Karcy notes, “In exploring the mysteries still surrounding Mary Magdalen, one of the least understood women in history is brought to light. This film will be of great interest to historians, religious scholars, interested laymen and feminists. It is a story not about religion, but about sexuality and power. Ultimately, this is a story about love.”

She stood by the cross after the male disciples had fled. She watched his body laid to rest, fearless in her grief. It was on the third day that Jesus first appeared to her. Some say she was the closest to Jesus of all his followers. Some say she was Jesus’ lover and that they had a secret child together. But the world would come to call her a prostitute. Is she misunderstood or the harlot the bible describes? As the LA Times noted, the program “is an hour long attempt to rehabilitate the sullied image of ‘the other Mary’, recorded in all the four synoptic Gospels as one of Jesus’ most faithful followers. Or, as host Penelope Ann Miller asks, ‘How did she become the bad girl of the Bible?’”

Who was Mary Magdalen? Was she the love of Jesus’ life? Or simply the strongest of His followers? How did she become the saint who was made into a prostitute? As the narrative in this documentary notes, all major female figures in the New Testament were either virgins or whores. The film suggests to the layman that Mary’s inclusion in such a significant role in the Bible was in itself an astonishing act of feminism, at a time when women were almost never singled out in texts of any kind.

V.I.E.W. Video is proud to present the award-winning Lifetime cable program Mary Magdalen: An Intimate Portrait for the first time on DVD. The DVD retails for $19.98. For further information or screening copies call Jerald Miller at (212) 674-5550 or email pressreview@view.com.
