Calling All Math Enthusiasts; April is Mathematics Awareness Month

Sylvan Dell Publishing helps parents get their children excited for math.

Mount Pleasant, SC, April 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- It’s time to put your counting cap on. April is Mathematics Awareness Month. Mathematics Awareness Month is dedicated to celebrating mathematics and its many contributions to the world of academia. What should you do if your kids aren’t avid math fans? How about getting them excited about math with the help of picture books? Sound crazy? Well, just check out the Sylvan Dell Publishing titles One Wolf Howls and CBC Children’s Choice Award finalist, Sort It Out.

One Wolf Howls takes the reader on a counting adventure into the world of wolves and their natural habitat. Using the months of the year and the numbers 1 through 12, this book introduces children to wolf behavior through its rhyming text. Your children can hone their math skills while learning fun facts about these fascinating creatures at the same time. Once you’ve read One Wolf Howls with your child, why not test his or her knowledge by trying to match images of wolves with their corresponding behavior? Or you could head to the One Wolf Howls website and take an interactive math quiz. These activities and more can be found at http://www.sylvandellpublishing.com/Wolf.php.

Looking for another way to get your child excited about math? The Children’s Book Council has just declared the math-themed title, Sort It Out! a 2009 Children’s Choice Award finalist. The Children’s Choice Book Awards program was created to provide young readers with an opportunity to voice their opinions about the books being written for them and to help develop a reading list that will motivate children to read more and cultivate a love of reading. Over 15,000 children and teens selected the book finalists…so why not see what all the hype is about?

Sort It Out! is an energetic and lively children’s book written in rhyme. This book invites kids to help Packy the Packrat get organized as he sorts through his ever-growing collection of trinkets and puts them away. Through Packy’s quest to organize, children are able to learn the power of analogous thinking—a skill author Barb Mariconda believes is as important in writing as it is in mathematics. Once you’re finished reading Sort It Out!, your kids can complete different sorting and counting activities in the “For Creative Minds” section – a perfect way to pay tribute to Mathematics Awareness Month in a fun-filled way. Additional activities and a math quiz are found at http://www.sylvandellpublishing.com/Sort.php.
