April is Autism Awareness Month
April has been designated at Autism Awareness month. ne in 150 children have a diagnosis of autism. Oregon has one of the highest diagnosis rates in the country. In order to raise awareness, resources and support for the families affected by this disorder, there are several events in Portland, Oregon to support.
Portland, OR, April 03, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Autism Society of Oregon Hosts Events to Increase Awareness in the Community.
The Center for Disease Control reports that 1 in 150 people have autism. Autism is now recognized as the fastest growing disability in the United States. Oregon has the one of the highest rates of autism diagnoses in the United States. In 2006, the Oregon Department of Education reported 1 in 98 students are on the autism spectrum.
The Autism Society of Oregon (ASO) is at the forefront for sponsoring events during April, Autism Awareness Month. The April events help to create understanding of autism and its distinct needs in the Oregon community. Three events are occurring in the Portland metropolitan area-Bounce for Autism, the Autism Walk-a-Thon and the Autism Ball:
Friday, April 10th: ASO is co-sponsoring with the Autism Society of America the Bounce for Autism at the Pump It Up in Wilsonville, OR, located at 25749 SW Canyon Creek Rd. The event will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Go to www.bounceforautism.org to register and start your Bounce Team.
Sunday, April 19th: ASO is hosting the 7th annual Autism Walk-a-Thon at Oaks Park in Southeast Portland. This is the largest autism event in the state of Oregon during April, Autism Awareness Month. Oaks Park is located at 7805 SE Oaks Park Way on the East end of the Sellwood Bridge. The registration desk opens at 9:30 a.m., the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. and Oaks Park rides open at 11:00 a.m. The cost is $12 per person for pre-registration and $15 per person on the day of the event. Teams can register for $10 per person. The registration price includes the event tee shirt. On-line registration and pledge forms are available at www.asoautismwalk.com. ASO will also be selling discounted ride bracelets to Oaks Park which will cost $12.00, regular price is $14.50. The rides will open at 11:00 a.m. For the 3rd year in a row, The Standard Company is the Title Sponsor for the 2009 Autism Walk-a-Thon. Entertainment scheduled to perform are Radio Disney, the Sellwood Marching Band, B.J. the Clown and camp leaders from Mt. Hood Kiwanis. Other activities include face painting, crafts and other vendors will be in attendance.
The expected attendance is approximately 2,000 walkers with many children with autism participating in the walk. The intent of this event is to increase awareness of autism, inform families of services currently available and bring community agencies together in order to support families with children living with autism.
Proceeds from the Autism Walk-a-Thon provide scholarships for children to attend summer camps which specialize in the unique needs of those on the autism spectrum, host a conference on special education law, fund the many support groups that ASO sponsors in Oregon and to continue the statewide program Take a Break on ASO.
Saturday, April 25th: The Autism Ball will be held at the Melody Ballroom, 7:00 p.m.located at 615 SE Alder, Portland. This is a silent auction with dinner, drinks and dancing.
