StraighterLine Meets or Exceeds DETC Standards for Online Courses

Washington, DC, April 04, 2009 --(PR.com)-- StraighterLine (www.straighterline.com), a company that combines award-winning technologies into a new service that provides a highly affordable, better-supported and more flexible solution to fulfilling college general education requirements, has announced that the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) has reviewed StraighterLine’s courses and finds them to meet or exceed its standards for online courses. DETC member colleges may enroll students in these courses without seeking additional approval from DETC.

In a statement, StraighterLine CEO Burck Smith said: “This DETC review and approval of our curriculum does not mean that our company is a DETC accredited institution. It means that our curriculum products and services have been found by DETC to meet the DETC accrediting standards for curricula material, faculty qualifications and service on these curricula.”

The DETC is a voluntary, non-governmental, educational organization that aims to be a resource for distance learning institutions, encouraging them to strive for excellence in fulfilling their missions. Through voluntary assessment and high standards for academic quality, DETC intends to stimulate excellence in student services, student learning outcomes and consumer protection, assuring the public that its accredited institutions are fulfilling their stated purposes and addressing the public’s expectations.

StraighterLine, recently tabbed by Business Week magazine as an innovative, “disruptive education technology,” provides students with a new online option for obtaining required college credits from accredited colleges and universities. Students who complete a StraighterLine course can choose to receive credit from one of StraighterLine’s five regionally accredited partner colleges. Student-earned credits may also be transferable to non-partner colleges that recognize StraighterLine’s partner’s courses as equivalent programs, including DETC member colleges. The combined costs of either approach will save students thousands of dollars as compared to the current estimates the College Board provides for both public and private colleges and universities.

Currently StraighterLine offers eight entry-level college courses, including College Algebra, Precalculus, English Composition I, English Composition II, Accounting I, Accounting II, Economics I: Macroeconomics and Economics II: Microeconomics, and two developmental courses, with more planned.

Additional information on the StraighterLine program, including a list of all partner colleges, can be found at www.straighterline.com or by visiting the StraighterLine blog at www.mmimarketing.com/blog/?author=straighterline.

“To complete an assessment by the DETC successfully is a tribute to StraighterLine,” said Smith. “We are pleased to provide our students another big advantage in that they can now apply to DETC member colleges and receive a quicker review for acceptance into those institutions.”
