Montgomery, AL, April 06, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Atlanta mom Kathie McClure and the VoteHealthcare.org Purple Bus make their way to the State House steps in Montgomery, AL on Tuesday, April 7th for a “Rally for Healthcare Reform Now!” co-sponsored with Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice and Arise Citizens’ Policy Project.

The VoteHealthcare.org Purple Bus is kicking off the second leg of its National Tour. From April through June, the Purple Bus will travel more than 8,000 miles through 17 states, raising awareness about the increasing numbers of Americans who can’t afford health coverage or care. This year’s first stop was at the White House Regional Forum on Health Care in Greensboro, NC, where Kathie McClure spoke out against insurers’ practice of refusing to insure people with “pre-existing conditions.” After the Montgomery Rally, the Purple Bus begins its Gulf Coast Tour on the way to California and back.

Affectionately known as the “Purple Bus Lady,” Kathie McClure clocked more than 6,500 miles last year in the Purple Bus, partnering with grassroots organizations in 13 states educating citizens and empowering them to speak up for meaningful healthcare reform. “I have spoken with thousands of working Americans who have told me that health care and coverage are unaffordable. People are suffering, and they want action now,” Kathie said.

Kathie and her family learned about the holes in our health care system the hard way. Son, Chris, with Type 1 diabetes, and daughter, Caitlin, with epilepsy, can’t find affordable individual coverage because insurers don’t want to sell policies to people with “pre-existing conditions.” Kathie decided to stop complaining and take action. She started VoteHealthcare.org, fixed up a little school bus and began a National Tour to deliver her message of empowerment: “Together, we can fix healthcare!”
