Political Commentary Through Spoken Word Poetry Video by Kamal Supreme
Spoken Word poet Kamal Supreme has released a new video poem produced by new black music.net to address the state of black life in America in 2009. He shines a light on issues of police brutality, lack of housing and other social issues that continue to exist no matter who is in the white house.
New York, NY, April 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- New Jersey Spoken word Artist and performer kamal Supreme has released a new poem about the state of black America. The poem entitled 'state of the black nation' deals with the issues facing african americans in the era of Obama and the democratic party dominance in America. According to kamal supreme, “spoken word is not rap, it is not hiphop but contains elements of both. Most artist use it as a tool to make social and political statements. In addition to just having fun”. Kamal supreme long considered one of the premiere spoken word performers in the genre said that he gets his inspiration from pioneers in the genre like Gil Scott-Heron and the last poets. Kamal noted, “You must realize that if you try to emulate people like the last poets or Gil Scott-Heron some people are going to offended or misinterpret what you are trying to say. That can be used as a key to open up dialog and that is what this type of poetry is all about”. Kamal supreme said that the purpose of his poem is to bring attention to so many issues in black america which remain unresolved.
Kamal stated, “yeah we're all glad and proud to have a black president but now what”, he went on to talk about the lack of housing in many urban communities and the gentrification of black neighborhoods.
According to kamal supreme, "the lack of housing is a big issue that needs to be addressed, all of the new construction is luxury condos or high priced developments beyond the reach of the average person. If you want to turn people bitter and angry and anti social make it so they can't have a decent place to live”. Kamal supreme also addresses the issue of police brutality and excessive violence by police departments against african americans. “The word in black america is that police are out to prove that just because we have a black president that doesn't mean anything. Some police are out to prove their supremacy through violence just like the overseers years ago on the plantation, in other words it's all business as usual”. When asked why spoken word music is not more popular kamal said, “poetry and spoken word have always been a underground art form. Even the greatest spoken word artist got very little airplay. But still artist like Gil Scott had great notoriety and 40 years later people are still buying his music and poems, And thats all that matters”. New black music.net produced the video for the spoken word work which Kamal supreme has on youtube and other websites.
Kamal stated that the use of videos will go a long way toward making the spoken word art form more popular. He stated, “it's not enough just to get up in some small club and spit your poem, we have to use all types of media to get our messages out. When you start seeing spoken word videos on BET then you will see really great poets coming out of the woodwork”. On the future of black america under the Obama administration kamal stated, “we have to wait and see what happens. The current economic situation will impact black people very hard because we are already experiencing so many problems. Remember black america is still trying to socially recover form the late 80's early 90's, a time when crack devastated our communities in ways you can not imagine. With Obama at least we know he's not gonna try to hurt us”.
