About the Chilkoot Indian Association
The constitution and by-laws of the Chilkoot Indian Association Tribal government were ratified on December 5th, 1941. A seven-member IRA Tribal Council represents the Association, which has a current membership of 485 Alaskan Natives and American Indians. The Tribal Council is recognized by the federal government as the official Tribal governing body for the predominately Tlingit Natives of Haines, Alaska. (Membership is open to all Alaskan Natives and American Indians who are permanent residents of Haines).
Today, the Tribe has a two-million-dollar annual budget and employs 12 full-time office staff. The Tribe has developed all the departments required for its government, including: Housing and Transportation, Culture and History, Economic Development, Human Resources and Organizational Development, Accounting and Finance, and Administration.
