Habitat Starts Building in Hamlet for Herbin family
Aberdeen, NC, April 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- On Saturday, April 11th, Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills starts building a home for Marilyn Herbin and her family. This is one of two homes planned for the 2009 calendar year. Build days will be Saturdays only, a twelve week build schedule total, to accommodate more volunteers.
Marilyn Herbin applied for a Habitat house in March 2008 and was approved in June. Ms. Herbin works for The Hospice of Scotland County and has four grandchildren. A dedicated future homeowner, she started on her sweat equity immediately receiving her acceptance letter; she is required to complete 300 hours and is well on her way to completion of those hours. The land where the house will be built is family land and she will be living next to her cousin. Ms. Herbin lost her home to a fire in 2006 and has been living in an apartment as she waits for her new home to be built.
“I’ve prayed to God to help me build a home on the site where I was born. After losing all I had in a fire. I have cried and prayed many nights for the restoration of my house. Currently the ruin from the fire of total burnout is what is left on my land. I believe he has sent Habitat for Humanity to do just that,” says Marilyn Herbin.
Judie Wiggins, Volunteer Coordinator, is busy finding groups that are interested in coming out to lend a hand on the construction site. A group of about 8-10 people from Continuum Care Services has already signed up for the first team build this Saturday’s kickoff. Any groups interested in helping out, contact Judie Wiggins at the information below.
Swinging a hammer isn’t the only way to volunteer to help out with this project. Every build day needs a mid-morning snack and a lunch to feed the construction volunteers. Past lunch donors have included Andy’s Cheesesteaks, Dominos Pizza, Sonic Drive In and Pizza Hut as well as many civic organizations. Individuals and churches are encouraged to sign up for lunches as well. Two dozen homemade muffins make the perfect mid-morning snack for busy construction volunteers. If interested in helping out with food, please contact Judie Wiggins at 295-1934 or jwiggins@sandhillshabitat.org
Habitat’s mission is to work with low-income people in the community by providing them an opportunity to own a house. Habitat is looking for volunteers and stresses that no experience is necessary. The worksite is fun place for fellowship, friends and some hard work.
Directions to the build site:
Take Highway 1 South to 177 at the Rockingham Raceway. From 177, take Business 74 South to Highway 38. Take a right on Highway 38. Once on 38, take a left at the first stoplight, Main Street/Old Gibson Road. Little General Food Mart is on the corner. The Habitat build site is one mile down the road on the left. Park on either side of the road, but please park far enough on the shoulder as the road can be fairly busy and we don’t want to create accidents.
About Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills
Habitat of Humanity of the NC Sandhills was founded in 1988 by an inter-denominational group concerned about substandard housing, and it exists to serve citizens of Moore and Richmond Counties living at 60 percent or less of median income who need suitable housing. Habitat is a Christian ministry with an ecumenical bent and an interfaith focus. Habitat not only builds its houses with the potential homeowners and hundreds of volunteers, but also provides twenty-five or thirty year mortgages for the families at zero interest. Their services are available to people of all races and faiths, as well as to people who profess no religious faith. Since 1988, this affiliate has built 171 homes with and for families in need of affordable housing in the Sandhills.
