Dr. Rajiv Datta Appointed President of Nassau Surgical Society

Oceanside, NY, April 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Prominent surgical oncologist Rajiv Datta, MD, medical director of the Cancer Program and chairman of the Department of Surgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital , has been appointed president of the Nassau Surgical Society.

Founded in 1938, the Nassau Surgical Society’s mission is to advance the surgical knowledge of its members and hold all members to the highest standards of ethics and the delivery of services. It achieves this mission by promoting study and discussion among its members on the science and practice of surgery; encouraging members to present and publish scientific papers related to their surgical specialties; and disseminating information of public interest regarding all aspects of surgery.

Dr. Datta joined South Nassau in 2001 and is recognized as one of the leading head and neck surgeons in the U.S. , as well as an internationally known leader in surgical oncology. He was awarded the 2006 Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. In 2005, he was awarded a Fellowship in the International College of Surgeons and served as South Nassau’s Cancer Liaison Physician to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Prior to joining South Nassau, Dr. Datta was director of surgical oncology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.

A graduate of Grant Medical College in Bombay , India , he has trained at some of the most prestigious surgical oncology and head and neck surgery programs in the world, including Tata Memorial Hospital , the largest cancer center in Asia; and England ’s Royal College of Surgeons, where he achieved Fellowship. Following his stay at the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr. Datta continued his training with a Research Fellowship at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This was followed by a rare opportunity for a dual Fellowship in head and neck oncology and surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo , NY .
