The Earth Walk was formally inaugurated by Mr. Rajeev Sharma, Municipal Commissioner Gurgaon who flagged off the walk, inspired citizens to take the lead - “This is your city; you alone can ensure that it has a global ambience. The administration is willing to work with you in making the city clean and green.”
Students across the city, from schools including, The Shri Ram School, DPS & Scottish High among others, participated with great gusto in the walk. Members from various Resident Welfare Associations as well as corporate houses participated in this event.
It was indeed a mixed crowd of eco-crusaders – bureaucrats, corporate executives, babies in their parents’ arms, nursery kids, junior and high school students, and senior citizens. All enthusiastically walked the kilometre stretch from the Vatika Towers to the Sec 56 round-about where everyone took the “Save the Earth” Pledge.
All the participants signed the pledge to show their solidarity towards this cause. Everyone was committed to save the environment and promised to switch off the electricity the same night from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm as part of the global initiative - WWF Earth Hour.
Children listed initiatives that they would undertake to further this global movement at the local level such as segregation of waste in school, shutting off taps, not letting water run indiscriminately and switching off lights and appliances when not required as their contribution to Saving the Earth.
Many wrote messages, urging others to follow the lead - Placards carried innovative messages such as: “Energy Misused Cannot be Excused” and “Today’s Wastage is Tomorrow’s Shortage”.
