Nationwide FCC License Granted to TierOne Networks for 3.6 GHz Spectrum

Dallas, TX, April 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- TierOne Networks today announced it had been granted a nationwide FCC license to operate in the 3.6 GHz spectrum. TierOne is one of a handful of companies holding a 3.6 GHz license thereby creating “first mover” advantage.

The Federal Communications Commission grants licenses to fixed and mobile operators in the licensed 3.6GHz (3.65-3.7GHz). A number of national, non-exclusive licenses will be offered, with each licensee authorized to operate on all 50MHz of the band. The FCC is explicitly opening the band for WISPs, particularly to stimulate broadband access in rural areas. The Commission also supported opening the spectrum to enable the operation of emerging WiMAX technologies.

Any new equipment that WISPs may deploy will have to use contention-based protocols to avoid interference. The use of these protocols is the condition for allowing higher power operations in the band – a peak of 25 watts per 25MHz bandwidth, or one watt per 25MHz for mobile. These high power limits are important for covering sparsely populated rural areas.

Operators will hold their licenses for 10 years and can renew, assign or transfer or share base stations.
