Author Releases Literary Odyssey, from an Otherwise Comfortable Room

Venice, FL, April 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Where does one find a comfortable place from which to view the world? This is the question posed by a newly released novel, From an Otherwise Comfortable Room, written by Outskirts Press author Roger Sakowski—and for Sakowski’s main character, that comfortable place is as a hero and legendary bard in an epic tale.

William Homer Omkowski—Om to his friends—is an alienated, haunted old man who drinks too much. He tells a tale to a visitor that spans an entire evening and the following morning, about a loft party he attended in Baltimore some 40-odd years ago, and the tragic event that overshadowed it. But this story is only a framework. His rich but unsteady imagination enlivens a vivid tale laced with free associations, stream of consciousness, and poetry. Om’s memories are filled with poets, artists, druids, oracles, witches, and a mysterious woman akin to the White Goddess of Robert Graves. His tale has been recreated time and again over the years and has evolved into an ever-evolving journey which, for him, began 40 years ago in a college apartment. Over the years the once-simple narrative has taken on a life of its own.

This is the story of a man seeking to be noticed in a neutral universe that is at once frightful and absurd, loving and heartless. His conflict? He wants to celebrated but realizes that he is aimless and marginally important at best.

From an Otherwise Comfortable Room provides a literary feast for its readers, sitting comfortably among the books of both modern and postmodern literature. The novel turns from external reality to examine inner states of being, drawing on the stream-of-consciousness style of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, and the explorative style of T.S. Eliot. The structure of the book, taken from the early Christian monks’ transcriptions of Celtic epics, moves from prose to poetry, deviating from the usual narrative form even further. Literary types who enjoy Woolf, Joyce, and Eliot will consider this book a great find. The more causal and aesthetically minded reader will enjoy the imagery and find the story rewarding. Overall it’s an extraordinarily entertaining and satisfying literary experience—a mix of poetry, history, and clever dialogue—and a satisfying read for those who wish to escape and delve into Om’s Kafkaesque world. A strange and creative mindscape awaits.
