North Carolina SBA Selects Technical Services’ Lisa Pineiro as 2009 Small Business Person of the Year

Durham, NC, April 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Technical Services Inc., a privately held electrical training and recruiting firm, has announced that Lisa Pineiro, president at the firm and founder of WOmen @ Work, a nonprofit organization, has been named the 2009 North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year by the United States Small Business Administration (SBA). This annual award recognizes small business owners in each state who demonstrate the entrepreneurial spirit and honors their commitment to the community.

Pineiro will represent North Carolina at the 2009 National Small Business Week convention in Washington, D.C., May 17-19. During the event, a National Business Person of the Year will be selected from the state-level winners. The SBA exists to help Americans start, build and grow businesses. The agency aids, counsels, assists and protects the interests of small businesses in recognition that small businesses are critical to economic strength.

Pineiro is an active resident of the Durham community who is dedicated to building a strong base for the local workforce, specifically within the construction sector. In 2008, Pineiro launched WOmen @ Work, a nonprofit that encourages young women to get involved in traditionally male-dominated construction careers. She is a member of the board of directors for the Construction and Architectural Design Academy at Southern High School in Durham and vice president of the nonprofit Durham Careers in Construction, a group of construction professionals that educate young, at-risk, public school students about the wide array of lucrative careers in construction.

“It is a great honor to represent the state of North Carolina as its Small Business Person of the Year,” said Pineiro. “Small business growth is essential if we are going to see our economy rebound within the next few years, and it is exciting to be a part of that growth and success.”

About WOmen @ Work:
WOmen @ Work is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging young women to explore traditionally male-dominated construction fields. The organization was founded by Lisa Pineiro, a former cosmetologist who now owns her own electrical training and recruiting firm, Technical Services Inc. (TSI), in Durham, N.C. Pineiro saw the shortage of women in the construction industry and knew that this was a missed opportunity for many young women. As a result, Pineiro formed WOmen @ Work to persuade middle and high school age girls to embrace construction and other trades as a viable career path. Pineiro travels throughout the Southeast to spread her message during a hands-on program that allows young women to learn and exercise skills in construction.
