ToxicRisk.com Combines Latest EPA Toxic Release Inventory Data with Google Maps

In 1996 MapCruzin.com created the very first U.S. based interactive toxic release maps on the internet. This led to developing the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) maps for Environmental Defense Fund's Scorecard project in 1997. Since then, MapCruzin.com has developed many other map-based environmental internet projects because they believe that increased public awareness results in reducing risks. ToxicRisk.com, based on EPA Toxic Release Data with Google Maps, builds on this history.

Eureka, CA, April 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- n conjunction with the week of Earth Day, MapCruzin.com, has launched their latest interactive mapping site - ToxicRisk.com.

Visitors to ToxicRisk.com will learn more about the potential threats of nearby toxic chemicals stored, released and transported in their communities and neighborhoods.

ToxicRisk.com's maps are based on the most recent annual Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) data released by EPA, March 19, 2009. MapCruzin.com was encouraged by the present presidential administration emphasis on transparency and openness and the EPA administration's emphasis on Right-To-Know.

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks and worries about increased security, many map-based environmental websites became hard to find or became totally unavailable to the public. Also, important government data became unavailable. MapCruzin believes in openness, transparency and citizen involvement, as does the current presidential administration. The risk is Not the information itself, but rather, is the amount of toxic chemicals.

MapCruzin.com believes that the best risk reduction plan combines facility security with a reduction in the amount of toxic chemicals in use. ToxicRisk.com will increase public awareness and encourage dialogue between citizens, local government and toxic chemical using facilities, resulting in reduced risk to those who live, work and play nearby.

This intuitive site allows visitors to search specific locations by city, state, or zip code. By using base maps served by Google Maps, ToxicRisk.com makes it easy for visitors to navigate to any point of interest. Once a specific facility is found, an additional click will provide a comprehensive RTKNet.org report detailing the facility's 20 year history of toxic chemical releases and use.

MapCruzin.com was founded in 1996 by environmental sociologist Michael Meuser. Since the early 1990's, Meuser has been involved in environmental justice and online GIS development which includes extensive toxic pollutant research. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of California. Meuser's son, Aran Deltac, has been with Mapcruzin since its inception and brings 15 years of programming and web development to Mapcruzin.

MapCruzin.com created the very first U.S. based online interactive toxic maps - their Santa Cruz Toxic Release Inventory. They went on to develop the interactive maps for Environmental Defense Fund's Scorecard project in 1997. Scorecard was an immediate success in bringing toxic chemical information to the masses. ToxicRisk.com continues this effort.

In the future ToxicRisk.com will expand to add several other EPA databases including hazardous waste, water pollution, criteria pollutants, superfund and risk management plans as well as demographics. This is the first in their new series of Community Right-To-Know Toxic Inventories using Google Maps. Caliper Corporations Maptitude GIS was used to create the geospatial data files from the raw EPA data.
