The Friend of Druid Hill Park select a Winner of the Maryland 5th Grade Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Baltimore, MD, April 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- For the 2nd year, The Friends of Druid Hill Park – a Baltimore based park advocacy organization, has sponsored the Maryland 5th Grade Arbor Day Poster Contest.

The purpose of the contest is to educate fifth grade students about trees and environmental stewardship. The 2009 theme, “Trees are Terrific… in Cities and Towns!” is designed to increase student’s understanding of the importance of trees in a community.

According to State Coordinator and FoDHP President, Tom Orth, more schools participated than in years past. “We had so many great posters to choose from, it was hard to pick a winner.”

After narrowing the field down to 4 posters The Friends of Druid Hill Park put the semi-finalists to a public vote. The posters were promoted on blast emails, twitter.com, myspace.com, facebook.com, DruidHillPark.org and other sites. According to Mr. Orth, “We received votes from a number of different groups and individuals! It was a fantastic way to promote the Friends and the poster contest.”

After tallying the votes, Nicolas Fullard of Samuel Coleridge Taylor, School #122. ( a copy of the winning poster is attached) was announced as the 2009 Maryland State Winner. Nicolas’ poster was forwarded to the National Arbor Day 5th Grade Poster Contest to compete against winners from all 50 states.

The Honorable Sheila Dixon, the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Friends of Druid Hill Park will be honoring Nicolas on Friday April 24th, 11am at the Baltimore City Arbor Day event in Druid Hill Park.
