Huge Gathering of Scrapbookers to Collect Cards and Supplies for FirstMemories Texas

Houston, TX, April 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Cards and scrapbooking supplies are being collected for FirstMemories Texas (supporting the Newborn Center at Texas Children's Hospital) during the Creating Keepsakes Scrapbooking Convention April 24-25 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

This is CK Media’s third convention in Houston and organizers anticipate thousands of crafters in attendance for a weekend of scrapbooking, card making, classes, and shopping.

A Chance to Give is a combination card and supply drive for the children and families associated with FirstMemories Texas. In addition to collecting scrapbooking, card making, and office supplies, the Creating Keepsakes Scrapbooking Convention will also accept pre-made, blank cards.

These cards will be distributed to the patients as well as to their families to allow them to easily keep in touch with loved ones and express gratitude to those who care for them on a daily basis.

“Over the past decade, our family has benefitted from our local children’s hospital. The level of care and concern they show for their patients is unsurpassed and we just wanted a chance to show our appreciation and support to these amazing children’s hospitals across the country,” said Paula Kraemer, Vice President of Events for CK Media.

Many people start scrapbooking to preserve memories and as a creative outlet. Scrapbooking and paper supplies afford an opportunity to escape from the difficulties and trauma of extended hospital stays. Scrapbooking gives families and children just such a creative outlet and helps build and maintain a place to document their journey.

Blank cards, products, and supply donations will all be accepted in the George R. Brown Convention Center lobby during the Creating Keepsakes Scrapbook Convention, April 24-25. For a more detailed list of products needed, please visit http://www.creatingkeepsakes.com/events/houston.

FirstMemories Texas
On April 13, 2007, FirstMemories Texas began serving the families whose infants were in the Neonatal intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) in Houston Texas. After months of organizing and recruiting volunteers, we began serving once a week with 6 volunteers. This past summer, we added a second service day and now have 18 active volunteers.

Our volunteers bring their own cameras and take photos of the babies with their families. We print 4 pictures and burn all of the photos to a CD with an Epson photo printer. We help them build a Story Card. We introduce them to other families. We listen to their stories, their hopes and their challenges, and by the time the card is finished, we see hope in each of their faces. For families whose infant will be in the NICU for an extended time, we offer donated albums for their infant’s photos and stories – and help them each week with their progress. We celebrate a baby’s homecoming day. We are sad when a baby dies and offer the family a pre-decorated grieving album to always honor and treasure their little one’s brief life.

During 2008, we served 425 families, built 635 story cards, burned 743 CD’s, and printed over 3440 photos.
