"Lose the Training Wheels" Gives Atlanta Kids with Special Needs Opportunity to Soar

Atlanta, GA, April 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Fischer Foundation, in cooperation with Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic & Cultural Affairs Dept. will host a Lose the Training Wheels Bike Camp for the first time in the Atlanta area to help children with special needs learn to ride a two-wheel bike independently.

The Lose the Training Wheels camp will be held at the Hembree Park Recreation Center from July 6 to July 10 to benefit about 40 children with special needs. Camp organizers are currently soliciting sponsors and volunteers to make the program available to participants at a cost of $200 each.

The Lose the Training Wheels program uses adaptive bikes and methods to teach children with special needs how to ride a conventional bicycle. Dr. Richard E. Klein, a retired professor of mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, developed the program through his research. The methods and equipment used by the program have helped over 86% of the children ‘lose the training wheels’ in just five days. The goal of the program is to provide children with special needs a lifetime of independent, low-cost transportation and the opportunity to be included among their friends right now.

Stephanie Meredith, the mother of Andy, a soon-to-be-10-year-old with Down syndrome, says, "Andy is so fearless when he's riding with his friends in the neighborhood, but he's starting to get too big for his bike with training wheels. The training wheels keep breaking. To be able to keep up with all the other boys, he needs to be able to ride a bike on his own. And, even more important, we want him to ride a bike as he grows older so he can get around and go to a job independently."
