The “Huntington Beach Relay for Life” will be held June 13th and 14th, 2009. Summer officially begins on the day of the June solstice and one week before the official welcoming of beautiful SoCal summer, the Huntington Beach Relay for Life (‘RFL’) will host its annual event at Central Park (Golden West and Ellis).
Central Park is one of the more beautiful locations in Surf City. A 356-acre park located in the heart of Huntington Beach, it opened in 1968 and is maintained by our City with pride. Home to the Central Library and Cultural Center, an Equestrian Center, Dog Park with a doggie restaurant, one of the first Disc Golf Courses, the Huntington Beach Playhouse, Lake Huntington, the Amphitheater and so much more, Central Park will be host to the 2009 Huntington Beach Relay for Life.
Victoria Alberty, the 2009 Chair is excited about the RFL at Central Park. “As Huntington Beach locals, we all have incredible pride in every asset associated with our beautiful Surf City. But at Central Park, it’s like walking into an isolated world filled with life… This is exactly the message we’re depicting through our Relay for Life”.
The dates for this year’s RFL are June 13th and 14th beginning at 10am on Saturday the 13th with the closing ceremonies at 10am on Sunday, the 14th. A 24-hour event, teams and their members gather on Friday, pitch their tents if they plan on spending Saturday nite at the Relay. Saturday morning, the teams, members, volunteers, fans and family members as well as supportive friends begin arriving at 7am and the 24-hours of celebrating 'LIFE DESPITE CANCER' begins.
Very little can compare with emotions that run rampant throughout the RFL. Cancer Survivors, grateful to be alive, support and encourage Cancer Victims enduring chemotherapy, radiation, medicinal treatments and more. Tears of sadness – tears of joy – flow freely as one greets the other. You can recognize Survivors and Victim’s because they are proudly wearing the traditional purple t-shirts which gives them their own ‘Medal of Honor’.
Volunteers are treasured – and always needed. The Huntington Beach community shows up in full force to support the Relay, too. The HB Fire Department and Police Department – honored by all – are out in full force. As they support and encourage Survivors and Victim’s, they are honored by everyone attending the Relay for the incredible work they do to keep all of us safe.
