Outskirts Press Releases the New Book, "An Internal Affair," by Michael Mahan
Ft. Wayne, IN, August 01, 2006 --(PR.com)-- After five years of writing and marketing, Michael Mahan has successfully published his first fiction/suspense novel. An Internal Affair follows Francie Rutledge as she attempts to break free from her past and establish herself as a credible force in her community.
"It took five years, but I finished it," quips Michael Mahan when asked about the recent release of his first novel. An Internal Affair weaves suspense, romance and humor into a tale of one woman's attempt to break free from her past and establish herself as a credible force in her community.
An Internal Affair follows Francie Rutledge, a woman who returns to her hometown with hopes of redeeming her family name. Several years earlier, her father, a local cop, is accused of gross misconduct and commits suicide to escape prosecution. While working a case, Francie uncovers evidence of corruption within the police department as well as among her closest friends, which points to evidence that there is more to her father's death than she realizes. Suddenly, cracking the case becomes more than just a way to redeem herself, it becomes an absolute necessity if she wishes to live.
Mahan began writing the story in 2001. "I was working on another novel but set it aside and started working on this. My intention was to whip out a romance novel in a matter of a few months, work on getting it published and then return to work on my original book."
Instead, he changed the genre of the book from romance to suspense. His first draft was completed in March of 2003. "I started to contact agents to see if I could get someone to represent me. I mailed more than one hundred letters over a period of three months. Only a handful asked to see sample chapters. It was extremely discouraging." Chris continued to submit his work to other agents. Along the way, he learned his experience was quite typical for new authors attempting to break into the publishing business.
In addition, a couple of people shared with Mahan that his protagonist was a bit off. "I was told my main character, a female private investigator, wasn't strong enough and didn't appear very competent. So I went back to work on the book, making major revisions, and adding a couple of subplots to address those issues." The final result, published by Outskirts Press in July of this year, is the 124,000 word suspense novel, An Internal Affair.
