IGEM and Steelhenge to Run a Series of "Managing Energy Emergencies" Workshops Following the Great Success of 2008 Gas Supply Emergency Workshop Events

Building upon the success of the joint gas supply emergency workshops held last year, IGEM and Steelhenge Consulting will deliver a series of workshops on "Managing Energy Emergencies." The workshops will focus on leadership of the response to different threats to the energy industry including pandemic and international emergencies

Salisbury, United Kingdom, April 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Following the success of the 'Planning for a Gas Supply Emergency' workshop series last year, Steelhenge and IGEM are to hold further energy emergency management workshops throughout June and July, this time covering the management of energy emergencies in gas, electricity and other fuels, and dealing with the effects of a global pandemic. Steelhenge Consulting Ltd, one of the UK's foremost emergency planning and business continuity consultancies, is delighted to have the opportunity to work with IGEM once more. "The response to the workshops we held with IGEM last year was so positive, we felt a second workshop series that also encompassed pandemic planning would be beneficial," explained Mike Gilbert, Director of Steelhenge's Energy & Utility Resilience Services team. "Delegates really appreciated the opportunity to hear about real energy emergencies from people personally involved in managing them, and to discuss various scenarios in teams. Personal experiences of energy emergency incidents bring all of the theoretical concepts of emergency planning to life and the scenarios enable delegates to think about the decisions they would have to make." When asked about the decision to incorporate pandemic planning into the new workshop, Mike replied; "The pandemic planning aspect is a natural extension, as staff absenteeism caused by a pandemic could be a critical factor in causing the energy emergency itself. The workshop will also explore the international impact, as there is so much international energy interdependency now. If a pandemic hits mainland Europe first, which is very likely, we could be suffering from energy supply emergencies before succumbing to the pandemic itself."

The workshop will be beneficial for individuals involved in the energy and utilities industry, and also members of local and regional government involved in critical infrastructure arrangements. "Delegates from the 2008 workshops praised the opportunity to see how emergency management measures within their company integrated with the local, regional and national government emergency response mechanism, and vice versa," commented Mike. "So we feel that these workshops will benefit delegates from both industry and government." The 'Managing Energy Emergencies' workshop will be held in London on 30th June, in Kegworth, East Midlands on 9th July and in Ireland on 15th July. Places are limited, so interested parties are urged to book early to avoid disappointment.
