Artist and Former Law Student Laurie Green Discovers There's More to Art Than Meets the Eye
Artist and former law student Laurie Green discovers there's more to art than meets the eye, which is why she is participating in an art awareness project, Art Beyond Sight Awareness. Laurie, a former law student at Florida Coastal School of Law, drew from her experiences in the legal field while painting "Blinded By Justice," the painting which she has written a verbal description of as her contribution to the awareness project.
Jacksonville, FL, April 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Laurie Green joins museums, schools for the blind, libraries and service agencies around the world to raise awareness of how important it is that art and culture be made available to children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. To help the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind celebrate Art Beyond Sight Awareness: Laurie wrote a verbal description of one of her favorite paintings, Blinded by Justice. Ms. Green plans to donate the painting to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind after its European exhibit tour, which begins at the Sala Rovira Gallery in Barcelona, Spain. The exhibit at the Sala Rovira Gallery runs from May 1, 2009 through June 14, 2009.
Verbal descriptions are among the tools used to teach children and adults who are blind or visually impaired about art. Museum touch tours, tactiles and art-making activities are other useful tools. The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind is among the organizations that understand the need to have these tools available. Without programs such as these, the worlds of art and culture would be closed to blind and visually impaired people.
Ms. Green became involved with Art Beyond Sight Awareness after volunteering with an art therapy organization where she taught painting techniques to adolescents with disabilities. One of the techniques Ms. Green taught in her course was the use of three-dimensional objects in portrait paintings. Laurie, herself, has utilized this technique in recent works, which has received rave reviews from critics and collectors alike.
