Sikhcess™ Launches ‘Feed the Homeless’ Campaign Across North America in April and May
Sikhcess™ volunteers prepare to feed homeless communities in honor of Vaisakhi, a celebration of selfless service, equality, and ‘giving back’ during India’s harvest season in the months of April and May.
Chicago, IL, April 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Sikhcess™ volunteers from across the United States and Canada have joined forces during the spiritually significant months of April and May to battle homelessness and hunger.
Sikhcess™ is a worldwide community service based organization dedicated to creating positive change by bridging cultural, socioeconomic, and religious divides. Sikhcess™ takes an active approach to public service by creating volunteer opportunities with the goal of enhancing quality of life for all humankind. During the months of April and May, the Organization is undertaking a continent-wide initiative to feed the homeless in celebration of Vaisakhi.
Vaisakhi, an annual celebration in April, is an ancient harvest festival that started in the Indus Valley which holds special religious significance for Sikhs. Millions of visitors make pilgrimage to gurdwaras, Sikh places of worship, to offer prayer and selfless service in the spirit of helping others. Parades and processions occur throughout the month to celebrate this auspicious holiday, where in 1699, the Sikhs were given a clear identity and a code of conduct to live by.
Mr. Neal Singh Ahluwalia, the National Coordinator for Sikhcess’ United States operations, explained the significance of the holiday, “Guru Gobind Singh, the last living Sikh Guru, blessed us with an incredibly advanced and progressive value set.” Mr. Ahluwalia continued, “He encouraged the world’s people to become ‘Khalsa’, or free themselves of anger, greed, attachment, and ego, and to live with purposeful action by elevating themselves as a humanity through diligence, spirituality, and service.” Sikhcess embraces this concept, as it welcomes people of all races, religions, cultures, and backgrounds to participate in its campaigns.
Through the months of April and May, Sikhcess volunteers will collect food donations and prepare a delicious and nutritious ‘Langar’, or ‘Free Community Kitchen’, in the form of individually prepared food packages to distribute to the homeless and needy. The massive effort is taking place in cities across North America, including Chicago, Toronto, Los Angeles, Detroit, Vancouver, Sacramento, Des Moines, Washington D.C., and others.
The Sikh institution of 'Langar' was started by the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak. It is the only free kitchen of its kind in the world, collectively serving millions around the globe each year, regardless of gender, social standing, caste, color, religious affiliation, or beliefs. Through this ideal of equality, the tradition of 'Langar' expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness, and oneness of all humankind.
Working to address homeless hunger, Sikhcess™ has taken 'Langar', or the 'Free Community Kitchen', to those on the streets. To date, Sikhcess™ has completed its worldwide 'Feed the Homeless' campaign with great success, providing over 150,000 meals to the needy across the globe. Volunteers in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates have participated in this, and other campaigns designed to help where it’s needed most. Sikhcess has provided basic-needs hygiene packages, blankets and jackets, and food to the homeless and impoverished.
“2009 is going to be a very exciting year for Sikhcess,” stated Mr. Amit Singh, Executive Director of the organization. “From our humble beginning in 2007, we have evolved - starting with just a few people with the intent to make a difference, into a highly-organized, extremely effective community-service based organization.” He continued, “Every day, we strive for excellence, as demonstrated by our ambitious Management Teams. Our Operations Team is increasing our global presence, creating efficiencies, and developing new leaders. Our Development Team is researching areas where we can be most impactful and finding sources for new project deployment. Our Communications Team is tapping into new forms of social media to gain a wider volunteer base and more community-based support. Most of all, however, the credit goes to our City Executives and Volunteers on the ground. Without their efforts, none of this would be possible. It is through their drive and determination that we are able to progress and accomplish more in helping serve those who need it most every day."
