Software Engineer Quits Job to Explore Lower 48 and Launches Live-Tracking Website
In the current economic crisis, where people are struggling to keep their jobs or desperate to find one, Andrew Fu has quit his software engineering job to fulfill his dream of exploring all 48 continental states. Most may think that this is risky, but to Andrew, he is truly “seizing the day.”
Savannah, GA, May 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In the current economic crisis, where people are struggling to keep their jobs or desperate to find one, Andrew Fu has quit his software engineering job to fulfill his dream of exploring all 48 continental states. Most may think that this is risky, but to Andrew, he is truly “seizing the day.”
After leaving a high-paying position with SanDisk two months ago, the 25 year old Milpitas, CA native sold all his possessions and set out across America. What spurred the decision was not a sudden itch to go out on the road or fulfill an escapist fantasy. When asked what inspired him to take the trip, Fu’s explanation is simple, “I wanted to cut back the clutter in my life. This trip will show that only the bare necessities are needed to sustain myself and that the best things in life are free.” Andrew lives out of his car, eats meager meals of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and canned fruits, and goes wherever the road takes him.
“I was inspired by others who fully lived life and realized their dreams. The way for me to fulfill my dream of an adventure was to hit the road and live it day by day” says Fu. His goal is to discover the American frontiers by exploring the diverse cultures and environments offered in America, according to his website whereisthefu.com. By interacting with different demographics firsthand – musicians, blue-collar workers, the homeless – he hopes to understand the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our country. “Different experiences help me get out of my comfort zone and see things from another perspective,” he says.
Each day of the trip thus far has been unique. His experiences go beyond the typical road trip escapades. In New Orleans, for example, he became a street musician for a day. When he was in Little Rock, AK, he passed by a “Light the Night” walk hosted by the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, and decided to start fundraising two hours before the event started. Within the hour, he had fully raised his portion from perfect strangers.
Andrew insists that leaving his job was a tough decision. “Leaving your comfort zone is never an easy thing,” he said. “I understand that not everyone has the opportunity to do what I am doing.” To help others at least get a sense of his experiences, Fu has set up a live-feed on his website so that visitors can see pictures and track his road progress in real-time. In addition, he keeps a blog about his journey at whereisthefu.com. “I hope my travels inspire others to follow their own dreams,” he says.
Andrew is currently in Georgia on week 7 of his four month trip. At the end of his journey, he will enroll in a prestigious MBA program, surrounded by those pursuing their dreams of entrepreneurial success. For Andrew though, his dream will have been achieved -- exploring and experiencing America in a way that few people can begin to fathom.
