Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Jr., US Senate Candidate in Florida, Provides Statement on Governor Crist

Marion D. Thorpe, Jr. MD MPH, Candidate for US Senate and Florida's Former Chief Medical Officer, issues statement on Governor Charlie Crist.

Miami Beach, FL, May 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Marion D. Thorpe, Jr. M.D., M.P.H., former Florida Agency for Health Care Administration Chief Medical Officer (CMO), officially entered the race for U.S. Senate in Florida in early January of 2009. This Senate seat is being vacated by Mel Martinez who has decided not to seek re-election in 2010.

In response to today's decision by Governor Charlie Crist to also enter the race for U.S. Senate in Florida, Dr. Marion Thorpe has released the following statement:

Thorpe states, "I welcome Governor Crist into the race and look forward to sharing and comparing ideas on how best to represent the state of Florida in the United States Senate. He is a good public servant, who has done his best for the state of Florida. I look forward to debating the issues of health care, energy policy, economic development, foreign affairs and immigration policy. Categorically, I am prepared to debate the Governor anytime, anywhere."

As Chief Medical Officer of the State’s Agency for Health Care Administration and as a private sector CEO and CMO, Dr. Marion Thorpe often convinced HMOs to provide patients with Health Promotion and Disease Prevention protocols. He did so by pointing out the clinical benefits of having patients maintain sound baseline health, and also by pointing out the fiscally sound benefits obtained by promoting healthy living and preventive care as a means of curtailing costs on far more expensive catastrophic and emergency treatments down the road.

On the topic of Health Care reform, Dr. Thorpe states, "Good health care is most essential to Florida’s economy. We truly need a good mix of private sector participation and public health intervention in order to ensure that quality of care is maintained in a manner that is accessible and affordable. In the plainest of terms, Florida must embrace the crucial fact that good health care is essential to our economy's stability and growth.”
