NPSA Applauds Phoenix Architect for Green Design
The National Portable Storage Association is applauding the plans of Phoenix architect Lorenzo Perez. Perez has designed studio apartments that make use of recycled portable storage units.
Kansas City, MO, May 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Portable storage is the picture of diversity – and eco-friendliness – in an economy that demands flexibility and cost savings. With a global downturn that has seen fewer shipping containers making their way overseas, architects are looking for ways to recycle the portable storage units. Lorenzo Perez has found one way.
The NPSA commends Perez, a Phoenix architect and developer, for his plans to build studio apartments out of used shipping containers. Perez is the latest architect to explore new uses for all-steel portable storage containers that have a life-span of at least 50 years. His idea is proven: Others are already using containerized storage to build dorm rooms, apartments, homes and shopping centers.
"Portable storage containers are not only an affordable means of developing housing, it's also a 'green' way to develop studio housing," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "We applaud Perez for his efforts to create studio apartments using portable storage units that would otherwise sit empty waiting for their next opportunity to ship goods overseas."
When Perez has finished construction on the studio apartments, it will be difficult to tell they were once portable storage containers. The containers' interiors will be outfitted with drywall, windows and doors and heavily insulated to conserve energy. These studio apartments may or may not qualify for the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, but Perez is nevertheless building green.
