Troops Team Up for Habitat
Aberdeen, NC, May 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- On Friday, March 27, Charlie Company from the 319th MI Battalion arrived at the Habitat warehouse ready to work. Led by Lieutenant Josh Nunally, the group of about 30 troops completed the finish work on four sheds and built one from scratch that will eventually be placed in homeowners’ back yards. The work included putting on roofs and shingles, adding trim and painting.
The day was led by Habitat staff person Sue McKenzie, who is new to the affiliate, but not to Habitat’s mission. She’s been an Americorps member and volunteer for Habitat for over 10 years. Sue had a wonderful time working with the troops and hopes they’ll come back again soon. It looks like her wish will come true. Charlie Company is hoping to schedule a work day once a month.
The group is part of the 319th Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Bragg. Charlie Company arrived home in December 2008, with half the platoon returning from Iraq, the other half from Afghanistan. “Fast, Factual, Faithful” is this team’s motto, but it was also the way the team worked on the Habitat project. When deciding where the group should volunteer, other non profit organizations were considered, but Habitat’s international identity played a factor. “Everyone knows about Habitat and everyone can identify with the need for affordable housing,” said Sergeant Chris Washington, a Charlie Company team leader, “I think we all appreciate what Habitat does, you can see the results of your hard work.”
About Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills
Habitat of Humanity of the NC Sandhills was founded in 1988 by an inter-denominational group concerned about substandard housing, and it exists to serve citizens of Moore and Richmond Counties living at 60 percent or less of median income who need suitable housing. Habitat is a Christian ministry with an ecumenical bent and an interfaith focus. Habitat not only builds its houses with the potential homeowners and hundreds of volunteers, but also provides twenty-five or thirty year mortgages for the families at zero interest. Their services are available to people of all races and faiths, as well as to people who profess no religious faith. Since 1988, this affiliate has built 171 homes with and for families in need of affordable housing in the Sandhills.
