Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills Will Assist 1 More Family in 2009 as Part of $24 Million Effort Across the U.S.
Aberdeen, NC, May 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The alliance between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans continues to build hope for low-income families amidst economic difficulties as the mortgage crisis unfolds nationwide. Since 2005, it has given more than 1,000 families an opportunity to achieve the American dream of homeownership. In 2009, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity will contribute more than $24 million to help build another 314 affordable homes in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Hundreds of local Habitat affiliates will build these homes alongside members of Thrivent Financial and other community volunteers.
Locally, Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills has been awarded $55,043, or 65 percent of the funds necessary, to build 1 home in 2009 through the alliance. This home will be built by area volunteers, of whom at least one-half will be Lutheran and one-fourth will be Thrivent Financial members. The Habitat partner family will also invest 300 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build their home. Construction will begin April 4 and is expected to continue for two months.
Since the inception of the Thrivent Builds alliance, Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills has built 1 of the more than 1,000 Thrivent Builds homes constructed across the nation. In 2009, they join 225 other Habitat affiliates to build the 314 homes funded.
“Decent, affordable housing continues to be an unattainable dream for many families. But this support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans means that we can make that dream come true for one more family,” said Elizabeth Cox, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills. “We’re so proud to be a part of the Thrivent Builds alliance.”
Building 314 homes across the country is a huge undertaking. Based on actual numbers from the three previous years of the alliance, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity expects:
· more than 100,000 volunteers and the home-buying partner families to work side-by-side to complete these 314 decent, affordable homes
· a total investment of more than 600,000 volunteer hours on the construction sites
“While our members are committed to helping build these homes, we are always looking for more volunteers,” said Bob Northrup, Chapter Specialist of the Pines Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. “We hope others will consider joining us and experience the joy of helping another family realize the American Dream.”
Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity supports Habitat home-building in the United States and abroad through its Thrivent Builds Homes and Thrivent Builds Worldwide programs. It also supports the Thrivent Builds Mobile, a “multi-media exhibit on wheels” that will tour the United States in 2009 as it advocates for affordable housing and informs visitors about the Thrivent Builds alliance and how they can become involved.
