Petroleum Engineering Program Receives Approval from Ministry of Higher Education

Cairo, Egypt, May 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education has approved the Bachelor of Science degree in petroleum engineering offered by the Department of Petroleum and Energy Engineering at the American University in Cairo (AUC). This final approval follows a protocol that was signed last year between AUC and the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum in support of the new department and major.

“Only two other universities in Egypt offer a B. Sc in petroleum engineering,” said Magdi Nasrallah, professor and founding chair of the department of petroleum and energy engineering. “There is definitely a very strong demand for qualified petroleum engineers not only in the local market but also in the regional and global markets.”

The program combines the study of petroleum engineering, gas technology and alternative energy resources such as solar, wind, fuel cell and nuclear technologies. Its curriculum is designed to accommodate shifts in technologies toward alternative energy resources in light of the steady depletion of oil reserves.

“The energy component in the program gives us a significant edge in the market,” said Nasrallah. “We want to teach our students about alternative energies over and above their basic knowledge in petroleum engineering,” he added. “They should be educated enough to handle any of these areas if needed, at any time.”

Students are also exposed to the environmental issues related to the industry and trained to develop solid communications and information technology skills in order to meet the ideal petroleum engineering profile sought by multinationals.

The B. Sc. in petroleum engineering is tailored for accreditation by the Egyptian Universities’ Supreme Council, and the United States Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Accreditation, however, can only be considered once students graduate from the program. The first class is expected to graduate in three years. There are 80 students currently enrolled in the program.

“AUC petroleum and energy engineering graduates are expected to have excellent job opportunities in one of the highest paying professions worldwide,” said Dean Medhat Haroun, AUC’s School of Sciences and Engineering. “Our primary goal is to produce highly qualified engineers with the best possible preparation to compete in local, regional and global energy related job markets. Graduates will also have excellent opportunities to continue their education toward higher degrees.”

The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded 90 years ago and is one of premier English language liberal arts universities in the Arab world. A contributor to the social, political and cultural life of the Arab region, it is a vital bridge between East and West, linking Egypt and the region to the world through scholarly research, partnerships with academic and research institutions, and study abroad programs. An independent, nonprofit, apolitical, non-sectarian and equal-opportunity institution, AUC is fully accredited in Egypt and the United States.
