New Firm, Dust DNA, Combats Sick Building Syndrome in Homes

Chicago, IL, May 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Thousands of allergy sufferers could find significant relief simply by making a few adjustments in their homes, according to Dust DNA, a new firm that tests for allergens within residential structures.
Started by a former builder, Dust DNA sends certified inspectors into homes to test for 11 of the most common allergen proteins. Using a multidisciplinary team of doctors, health advisers and environmental consultants, Dust DNA then recommends corrective steps to minimize the effects of the allergens.
“I've found that the newer the home, the greater the problems,” said Darryl Morris, marketing director. “They're constructed so that they're really tight, and the home doesn't get a chance to breathe. It's like putting Saran Wrap around the house.”
Morris said the problem is similar to a condition, called Sick Building Syndrome, that afflicts some large commercial buildings. Because the building is sealed off to a large extent, conditions such as standing condenser water or limited air circulation can produce conditions that sicken people in them.
Morris said some of the same circumstances can occur in residences.
“What we do is gather dust from around the house and send it to our lab to tell us what allergen levels are there in minute, trace amounts,” Morris said. “Usually 1 to 2 grams will trigger allergic reactions.”
Dust DNA's lab-based tests have been developed to measure the 11 most important indoor allergen proteins at once in a single test. Dust DNA commonly checks for cat, dog, cockroach, three types of dust mites, two types of mold, birch and timothy pollen and mouse and rat residues. Dust DNA can also conduct a more detailed air-quality examination to investigate other specific air contaminants that could be causing discomfort or poor health.
Once the problem is isolated, Dust DNA will provide detailed recommendations on how to eliminate or minimize any issues found during testing.
