Champion-Arrowhead Chosen Converting All Their Plumbing Products to No‐lead, Nationwide, to Help Lower the Threat of Pollution and Toxic Substances

California law AB1953 is a major initiative focused on lowering the health threat of lead in pipes and plumbing fixtures. It revises the definition of “lead fee” within each component that comes into contact with the wetted surfaces of pipes and pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures. Effective January 1, 2010. Champion-Arrowhead is converting all of their plumbing products to no‐lead, nationwide and is focused on protecting drinking water through no-lead and back flow prevention.

Los Angeles, CA, May 21, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Over the years, there have been many initiatives around the world that are focused on lowering the health threat of pollution and toxic substances to humans. California is a leader in many of these initiatives. Being a California company with a manufacturing facility inside the Los Angeles city limits, Champion-Arrowhead keeps a close eye on the ever changing regulatory landscape. They have chosen to convert all of their plumbing products to no‐lead, to be sold nationwide, and to help communicate this significant change in policy to everyone.

California’s law AB1953 is an initiatives that must have the attention of companies that do business in the state of California. This bill:

Revises the meaning of "lead free" from 8 percent lead for pipes or pipe fittings, and 4 percent lead for plumbing fittings and fixtures to 0.25 percent lead content within each component that comes into contact with the wetted surfaces of pipes and pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures effective January 1, 2010.

Prohibits a person from using specified materials that are not lead free in the installation or repair of any public water system or any plumbing in a facility providing water for human consumption, except when necessary for the repair of leaded joints of cast iron pipes.

Prohibits a person from introducing into commerce, for use in California, any specified material intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption that is not lead free.

Exempts plumbing fixtures and related devices that are used in manufacturing, industrial processing, for irrigation purposes, and any other uses where the water is not intended for human consumption.

Charters the Department of Toxic Substance Control to sample products from store/distribution shelves every year and verify compliance with AB1953. It also requires that all products be certified as compliant with AB1953 through a third party.

Champion-Arrowhead recognizes that every member of their supply chain [contractors, retailers, distributors and manufacturers] are responsible for compliance with this law in 6 short months. There have been many discussions about what products are exempt. Champion-Arrowhead has been actively involved with the California Metals Coalition, an industry lobbying group of which Jim Gitney, CEO of Champion-Arrowhead, is a board member, in crafting and defining the implications of this law, including the verification of the use of ANNEX G of the NSF61 code as an acceptable validation method.

Champion-Arrowhead believes that the risk of non‐compliance is very high both from a commercial and human perspective.

At the end of the day, consumers should be focused on protecting their drinking water from harmful elements. That is why Champion‐Arrowhead has chosen to convert all of their plumbing products to no-lead.

As a result, Champion-Arrowhead is sponsoring a no‐lead trade fair on July 16 in Anaheim with the California Metals Coalition that will be open to all companies that do business in California, including contractors, manufacturers, distributors and retailers.

Although more costly, it is clear that Champion-Arrowhead's customers want and should expect, safer drinking water, and that legislation is going to dictate that nationwide. Champion‐Arrowhead is focused on protecting their customers' drinking water through back flow prevention and no‐lead. Champion-Arrowhead hopes contractors, manufacturers, distributors and retailers will join them in this important effort.

Feel free to give Jim Gitney a call to discuss this at any time, 626‐644‐9746.

Sincerely,
Jim Gitney, CEO
