Rowland Heights, CA, May 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- US and Canada communities are now celebrating the “Duan Wu Jie” or Dragon Boat Festivals with boat races, fairs and more.

Duan Wu Jie is celebrated every 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This year 2009, the “Fifth of the Fifth” is on May 28.

Dragon Boat Festivals are traditionally held to remember how the fisherfolk attempted to rescue a patriotic poet 2,000 years ago. This poet, Qu Yan, is a loyalist to the Chu Kingdom. When the Chu Kingdom fell into the hands of the Qin Kingdom, Qu Yan was broken hearted he plunged into the Milou River. Fearing that the fish and River Dragon will devour Qu Yan, the fishermen rode on dragon boats, beat their drums and paddled frantically to rescue Qu Yan.

Today, dragon boat racing is considered the highlight of the Duan Wu, and people gather to watch this event. Dragon Boats are long boats that may accommodate up to 80 paddlers. The boats are shaped like dragons, with one end bearing the open-mouthed head of the dragon. The stern on the other end is shaped like a scaly tail of the dragon. Two people up front of the boat guide the rowers as they race: the flag catcher and the drummer.

Besides the races, fun events for the community are also being organized; like food sales, entertainment programs, games, fireworks and the like. Events are sponsored by city governments, park associations, Chinese organizations, private companies and professional organizations, among others.
