Renaissance Melaka Hotel Associates Scour Streets of Malacca for Recyclable Items
Melaka, Malaysia, May 23, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A recent recycling campaign by Renaissance Melaka Hotel proved successful when it managed to collect more than a ton of recyclable items from shops in the heart of the city in less than a day. The campaign was jointly organised with the hotel’s Sports Club, Caring Club and ECHO and was part of Marriott Internationals activities for its Environmental Awareness Month, saw more than 30 associates taking part.
The half-day campaign kicked off at 9am when more than 30 hotel associates turned up and gathered at the hotel.
“We had in fact distributed leaflets to the shop owners five days prior to the event to allow them to get ready their discarded items. It was then left to our staff to collect the recyclable items from the shops,” said the hotel General Manager Thomas Salg after flagging of the event.
To make it even more challenging, those who took part were prohibited from driving to collect the items but to do so by hand. Associates were required to walk from shop to shop in the heart of the city to collect the items and the walkabout has provided much fun for the participating staff.
A total of 1.7 tonnes of paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminium cans were collected from shops and offices located along Jalan Munshi Abdullah junction, Jalan Hang Jebat and Jalan Bunga Raya.
Thomas hope the hotel’s small gesture of promoting the 3R system (reduce, reuse and recycle) would encourage more locals to recycle more of their discarded items in the future.
Proceeds from the sale of the recyclable items would be channelled to the Bukit Baru Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre.
